The Braco Highland Fold was
established in 1987 after we were inspired by these beautiful animals on a
trip to visit family in a small village called Braco in Scotland.
Highlands seemed the right breed to
have on our property which sat under the gaze of Mt Egmont/Taranaki.
They were a breed that had remained unchanged for centuries but still had
the right qualities for today - they are hardy, good mothers, supply low
fat and cholesterol beef, and they are great to look at.

Background to Braco bloodlines
When we started breeding in 1987, like most NZ
breeders, we had to go through the crossbreeding programme until our
cattle became Purebreds.
In 1995 we purchased a fullblood highland cow, Liz
of Norgrove, and her small family. Liz was imported from
Canada in 1979, one of only 5 Highlands that had been imported live into
NZ during the 1970's.
The other 3 cows and a bull came from Scotland and
we now have descendants from each of these imported animals at Braco.
Over the years we have visited more than 50 Highland
Folds around the world. On these trips we have personally
sourced new genetics and Braco in now a totally Fullblood Fold with
bloodlines that come from UK, Canada, USA and Australia. We
are proud to have Fullblood animals of all the 6 recognised Highland
Colours- White, yellow, dun, red, brindle, black.

One of the biggest influences in the breeding at Braco
has been Braco Black Sambo, from an embryo sourced in Australia but
with North American bloodlines. |
